The Dingbat’s Agenda
  • November9th

Late this summer Mindi contacted us regarding updating her business identity. She creates high-end confections that really are quite amazing. Attention to detail and only the best of ingredients used, we wanted to help refine her brand so it fit her target demographic better. Ruby Cakes has a lot of heritage behind it, with rubies being the birth stone, and Mindi’s royal ancestry it was only fitting to tie it all in together. She purchased a large branding package which consisted of extended rounds of design options, application to other pieces, and finally printing of those pieces via the letterpress process. Below are some of the versions we went through and as you can see, the progression to the final pieces.

    Ruby Cakes

Letterpress printed and designed by Dingbat Press ©2010. 110# paper for all pieces, printed on Crane’s lettra.
Tags measured 1.5×3.5″ – business cards measured 2×3.5″ – notes measured 3.5×5″ and paired with matching printed envelopes. If you are interested in some custom branding work you can see our starter branding package here or request a more detailed estimate!

When Yvette came to us for typographic help with her logo, as well as business card layout, we couldn’t be more excited because she provided Annie – her bombshell of an illustration to tie into the layout.

    Splendid Wife Proofs

    Splendid Wife Proofs

The main explorations here were to reflect a sort of Mad Men meets Bewitched vibe and Annie was the PERFECT Joan Holloway that Yvette provided for us to work with. We needed to first simplify Annie so she would look knockout for letterpress.

There are explorations with color variation within her dress, tights shoes, glove, and accents (belt, pleats). Annie even got a dye job in one option with some killer red hair, ultimately which didn’t last because she liked her dark do.

    Holiday 2010

    Posted in: Holiday

You saw a screen shot of these letterpress holiday cards awhile back, and now here’s the printed piece. My intern Adam had the lovely task pf printing these babies, and learning how overprints work with tight registration.

    LOVE Christmas 2010

Letterpress printed 2/0 with tint base added to the ink to create an awesome transparency with the over-printing. I hope love isn’t too Valentine’s for the holidays?! Wholesale buying for the Holiday 2010 Collection will be launching near the end of the week, and near the end of the month it will be available at retail for holiday buying!

Kate is a quite talented writer and asked me to develop her name/brand so that she can continue to grow her brand/blog as well as writing style into a larger audience. For the first round we explored typographic options for her name that were minimalist and retro. Although none of these were the direction she ended up heading in, I thought I’d show you our starting point for her designs!

    ChrisFenisonInvitation

This letterpress wedding suite was printed last fall for a Victorian Christmas wedding. Often I have the bride & groom looking for budget letterpress and I usually recommend a wedding suite with one ink color in that situation. So many people shy away from estimates if it includes only one ink color, however I wanted to provide an example of how beautiful a suite with one ink color can look! This couple had their budget pretty conservative but needed a lot of pieces in the suite so on the initial consult I provided an estimate for a 1 color suite. Since I was working with a designer (the groom), he was open to the option as well. In the end, it was printed on the thick 110# paper, and included was the reply/food option insert as well as a directions/map insert along with the initial invitation and outer envelope. When utilizing illustration in your wedding invitation design, you can really pack a lot into your design with only one ink color and still have it impress your recipients, so don’t rule it out from the beginning!

Remember these East Bay holiday cards? Well, Grace contacted me wanting a letterpress fine art print done with the same design. Thankfully with photo-polymer plates I was able to just whip out the scissors and trim the holiday greeting off the plate and meet her request. Initially I wanted to do this as a portrait print, however in the end the landscape orientation just suited so much better. This is the only decent photo I got after about 50 different variations. I’ve decided that shooting prints are a lot harder than smaller stationery pieces. Enjoy!

Happy President’s Day! I know sometimes this holiday passes us by, especially for those that are working but I just wanted to pay tribute to all our amazing presidents that have lead our wonderful country since it’s beginning. I feel so blessed to be a recipient of freedom, justice and liberty. My grandfather was a patrol plane commander in WWII and reading his journal is amazing and humbling. What a legacy he leaves for me and my posterity through that journal and his sacrifice to fight for his country. I made cards similar to these for him for Christmas one year, and then later decided to list them as a personalized note.

    Vintage Airplane Letterpress Notes

These Vintage Plane letterpress cards were a gift to a couple honoring their golden anniversary. Suiting since this husband also was a pilot in World War II like my grandfather.
