The Dingbat’s Agenda

These cards were letterpress printed on 220# arturo with Pantone match and matte metallic gold inks as a 1/1 business card for Phoebe. Phoebe is an excellent graphic designer and designed these cards for her branding collateral as an extension of her already awesome website.

I am a big fan of chevrons lately and am totally digging these wide set ones on the back of Phoebe’s card, how about you?

Edge painted with a custom mix strawberry ink, thanks Phoebe for being so excellent to work with! I loved how these turned out.

You may remember these that we showed back as a sneak peek in October. And then of course I was slow to getting around to blogging the full set of photos! Fifi is from Australia and a recent grad and contacted us in hopes that 1) we shipped internationally, and 2) We accepted designed files for press.

Lucky for her, we do both and were super excited to print these cards for her. Letterpress printed on 220# Arturo as a 2/1 card, I love the softness of the blushy-pink pantone match paired with the sophisticated black ink/black edge paint.

Sized at 2×3.5″ and printed as an initial set of 250 (our minimum opening order for a set of custom or client submitted files) you can get an estimate for yourself here - we are already booking the press for March and April!

We are already two months into winter here so needless to say, my mind is wandering to more tropical climates. These shipped out for a destination wedding and let me tell you, I SO wish I was somewhere warm right now. We have  lose to eight feet of snow banks on our road in places.

These were letterpress printed on lettra paper, 220# as a 2-color job. One thing I’m finding is that lettra – while a great paper – seems to exaggerate the “salty” look when printing large ink areas. It seems that paired with the texture and composition of the paper there is less ink absorbancy when printing a flood in comparison to other papers (Mohawk and Arturo come to mind specifically as having better absorbancy).

In the end, I think it depends on what sort of look you are going for. The salty ink coverage can add a very unique texture to a piece, especially if you are going for a more rustic or vintage look to your wedding suite. However if you are looking for a more consistent overlay and less ink transparency then ultimately you’ll want to go with a less textured paper.

Edge painted in hot pink, and paired with hot pink envelopes, I love how the salty print on these add character to the already flowing design. Do you like the salty look? Or do you prefer a more saturated look?

These shipped out last week to Australia to an awesome designer – LOVE the subtle nuances of the blush ink and black edge paint!  Can’t wait to show you the rest of the cards, man I have awesome clients that design great work.

This was a suite for a bride that shipped out awhile ago. We were in the final design stages here and presenting different envelope liner options for the bride to get an idea about how the liner can really transform the look of the piece. Can wait to show you the final printed piece!

Below are some wedding proofs we worked on early this summer for a bride getting married in Montana. While this isn’t where it ended up in the end – the first round explored a western/Victorian theme with imagery and typography. The overprinting would have been so cool on the 4×9 with the sunburst, but alas I can’t wait to show you the finished piece! Until tomorrow….

On occasion we are asked to take one of our existing designs and adapt it to a new color scheme as well as size. Nicole wanted her invites similar to Sarah and Jeff’s but adapted to the 6″ Square invitation size. Her wedding will be a tropical destination wedding and she’s drawing off the bright fuchsia and green hues to convey the type of event she is going for. Below are the proofs adapted to Nicole’s specifications, I can’t wait to show you the finished piece!!

Hello! I feel like I’m back from the dead! I’ll spare you the gory and boring details and save it for business Friday. For now, it’s back to blogging and FINALLY back to work! You may remember Stephanie’s RI proofs for a branding project that I blogged about here. Part of making a brand work for a business is being able to expand it from the logo into the rest of the business collateral, be it business cards, packaging,  promo pieces or website – how you extend your logo into an identity of yourself and brand extension of the initial concept will help make your business stand out from your competition. In Stephanie’s case it was extending her branding into business cards (her website is an awesome execution of brand extension as well).

When working on Stephanie’s design for business cards she wanted something that reflected her logo that we had done for her, but that also conveyed a look of minimalism paired with good organization. Her hierarchy was easy to work with and the logo helped hint us at where we needed to go with the stacking of her business name. The cards needed to be flexible enough for letterpress and offset printing as well as economical. Although we had the blush/grey with the heart going on in her branding, it was clear that we didn’t want to be overly cute with the design either. The emphasis on large margins helped with that sophistication, and the creative organization of the typography helped keep things playful within the design – ultimately not having it end up cute, but not having it be so minimalist either that it becomes stale. Below is the finished piece, what do you think?

As humans we all have off days. Here was a reject day. I worked on these among many other concepts and was really hitting a brick wall. Some of the rejections. Yes I’m glad we’ve moved on from this. I can’t wait to show you the final branding down the road!!!!

I’m a total sucker for some wailing banjo music, and even more so when they lyrics are A M A Z I N G! As I’m sure you’ve noticed a theme going on with the letterpress Valentine’s Collection 2011 – here is yet another set of cards inspired by my love for music. Calligraphy was done by the fabulous Grace Edmands Calligraphy and then incorporated into design for 2 really pretty Valentine’s Day Cards. Grace, thanks for collaborating on such a fun project – you really made these rock!

Love, it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you, it will set you free…

Here is Mumford & Sons live with Sigh No More (inspired above) – you have to listen to the song change about half-way though and then go check it out on Amazon or iTunes. It’s truly magical.

Cards Letterpress printed on Arturo 4Bar notes with blank interior, paired with matching envelopes and sold in singles in our Etsy shop. 2 inks, deckle edge, it doesn’t get much better than this.

It looks like Forest Green, Blush and of course Black were the big winners on the red carpet tonight. Can you say Wizard of Oz? Man I can’t WAIT to do some stellar wedding invites with these colors. What do you think?

Late this summer Mindi contacted us regarding updating her business identity. She creates high-end confections that really are quite amazing. Attention to detail and only the best of ingredients used, we wanted to help refine her brand so it fit her target demographic better. Ruby Cakes has a lot of heritage behind it, with rubies being the birth stone, and Mindi’s royal ancestry it was only fitting to tie it all in together. She purchased a large branding package which consisted of extended rounds of design options, application to other pieces, and finally printing of those pieces via the letterpress process. Below are some of the versions we went through and as you can see, the progression to the final pieces.

    Ruby Cakes

Letterpress printed and designed by Dingbat Press ©2010. 110# paper for all pieces, printed on Crane’s lettra.
Tags measured 1.5×3.5″ – business cards measured 2×3.5″ – notes measured 3.5×5″ and paired with matching printed envelopes. If you are interested in some custom branding work you can see our starter branding package here or request a more detailed estimate!
