Remember  the Jones & Vandermeer RI Proofs and the RII & III proofs? Well we’ve been working on some product tags for her beautiful mink yarn! Below was the first round presented. These will be offset printed 4/4 and punched with a 1/8″ hole for attachment.

You may remember the proofs for Jessica’s knockout wedding invitations. Well I’m excited to blog about the finished piece – again a new favorite! View the eye candy – I really don’t have much to say about them except that this was an amazing wedding suite to work on.

This was a 4 piece wedding suite for Jessica. We wanted to create variation between pieces but still have them tie together. Pool and black are her wedding colors, and she wanted an old-world feel to the invites.

Edge painted with a matching saturated pool, to set off her 1/8″ black border from the front of the invite. These were also packed in pool envelopes for the outer envelope, and black rsvp envelopes.

The invitation was printed on Lettra 220# with a full bleed damask pattern overlaid with registration black ink. The typography used was a pairing of Adobe Garamond as well as P22′s Zaner Pro.

The reception card was sized 4×6″, 1 color (black obviously) and printed on 110# lettra. We pulled out the damask pattern and changed the layout a little to create variety. I feel like I’m looking at some awesome black velvet when I see these stunning cards!

The RSVP card was a 3.5×5″ card printed on 110# lettra. The black border and simple dotted line were repeated in this card, but ultimately it was left with more negative space so as not to crowd the important information of making a meal selection.

If you are interested in a stunning wedding suite of your own, we do custom designs for all our suites. You can contact us to request an estimate for letterpress invitations and if you place your order by Feb 15th we’ll knock off 10% of your final invitation invoice as a Valentine’s Treat!

What’s in a brand? A lot. Think about the way you feel when you see different logos. The McDonald’s arches. Apple. Maserati. JetBlue. Nike. For some of those logos, I think of an experience. Or I think of a mood. Or food. Branding & Logo Design is as important for these large corporations as it is for a fledgling business.

At Dingbat Press we love and take great pride in the branding work we produce for our clients, whether we start from scratch, refresh an older logo, or provide layout work for an existing logo.

If you’ve been thinking about branding (or even if you haven’t) today I want to share a few thoughts and interesting articles I like on the topic.

    Negative Space

Making good use of negative space can add extra meaning to a logo, and can effectively create that “ah ha!” moment when the viewer’s eye catches on. FedEx is a classic example, one that I didn’t realize for years until someone pointed it out to me. Do you see the arrow? Or what about the continent in Yoga Australia? Or the hidden bear in Toblerone? This bear is the symbol of the city of Berne where Toblerone is produced.

    Color

Color is a big deal. Colors add power to a logo. Check out the top 100 sites on the web and the colors used in their respective logos in the infographic from colourlovers.com below:

As a follow-up to that article, colourlovers just posted a snapshot of the 2010 trends in businesses’ logos, and found that overwhelmingly we’re seeing a trend of red, blue, and blue/green combinations in logos. Check the logos examined in greyscale against a color palette that represents their actual colors below. Click through for the article.

Finally, as if you don’t get enough of it, check out some examples of our branding!

This was a small branding package that we worked with Michelle on for her stationery venture, Chunky Pineapple. She creates awesome gocco cards and needed some outside help with her identity. Sometimes we all get too close to the project, right? That’s where we came in. With her ideas about the brand we came up with some concepts that were in line with the look and feel she was going for. Below are Round I & II proofs as well as the final printed pieces. Enjoy!

    …………………………………………………………

    …………………………………………………………

Letterpress printed business cards and product tags. Printed on 110# lettra paper with 1/4″ rounded corner radius. Tags were hole punched with a 3/16″ hole, and ink was a pantone match. Business cards sized at 2×3.5″ and tags sized at 1.5×3.5″.

Hey folks.  Another post for Business Friday while it’s still here!  Many of you have likely started your weekends already but for those who are still in the office, we hope this is a welcome distraction for you!  This week I wanted to write about Skype and how it’s one of the many useful and cost effective (free.99) tools out there for small businesses.

Every new custom job we do (unless it’s a re-order from a returning customer) begins with a kick-off call.  It’s really the best way to start each job on the right foot.  Doing so reassures the client that their money invested in our design and letterpress services is well spent.  It also gives us the best idea or impression from the client as to what they need.  In the end, both parties leave the call informed and excited to see what our design team can concoct from deep within our wells of Dingbat Press creativity.

While most of our business is domestic, we certainly do work with foreign clients from time to time.  In dealing with these foreign clients, Skype is a necessary and ideal solution.  For example, recently, we sold some work to a client in Germany.   Wunderbar!  Depending on whether you’re working from Idaho or California it’s about an 8 or 9 hour time difference.  Not a big deal — we simply setup a time, shared our respective Skype usernames, and it’s a matter of click, shift-click, call and sha-bang-bang we had our three-way kickoff call.  And the call quality was fabulous.  One of our connections coming out of Idaho is typically shoddy; and considering our call had to send data to three locations (don’t forget crossing over the great Atlantic Ocean) I mentally prepared for the worst.  ’Twas not so, not slow in the slightest.  We enjoyed a pristine conversation until the very end where we actually did get cut off — however that had nothing to do with Skype and everything to do with a technician shutting off the power at the condo where I was staying!  We will absolutely continue to use Skype going forward for our international clients and recommend it to any small business owners who are looking for a long distance conferencing solution.  I expect as their group calling feature continues to improve and exits its beta phase, we will start using that down the road as well.

That’s about it for today.  We just wanted to share our experience and love of Skype with you out there who are looking to put together your own small shop.  And we look forward to Skype continuing to offer great service into 2011.  Hopefully they will make good on the money they plan to raise from their IPO next year!  I’ll gladly give.

You may remember the letterpress LDS Rexburg temple print I designed and printed back in 2008. Well, the second and final edition has been printed. This time instead of mint/bright gold, it is in silver/antique gold. It is an edition of 15 – we have already sold 5 and they are FINALLY SHIPPING! So if you’ve been pining for one, this is your last chance. We already threw the plates away upon completion. Get one for yourself before they are gone or as a gift to someone this holiday season!

So you may remember Abby’s cards that we designed and printed awhile back (2/1 with delicious blind impression on the rear).

We’ve been working with her on some blog backgrounds as well as banners. I just love seeing all the pieces come together! What do you think?

These cards are for Brad, a film editor – and we were exploring some different color options, as these were to be printed on grey paper – which can potentially post some ink transparency issues if the color isn’t really saturated. I love the look of the grey on grey with this card!

One of our best challenges yet, we laminated (duplexed) two sheets of 250GSM Rives BFK grey – which is oh so delicious to print on, with a 90# cover of neon blue Wausau cover sandwiched in the middle.

Makayla was getting high on spray glue, so was Adam.

The hardest part about printing this job was that with the dark paper sandwiched in the middle, we couldn’t rely on our trusty windows/light table for see-though registration on the back. The work-around was to print with the crop marks hanging off the edge of the paper so we could see the front to back registration with how the crop marks lined up looking at the sheet from a side-view.

These definitely had their moments on press, but we are always up for a challenge – especially something with
a cool outcome. Let us know if you’ve got a crazy idea, we’d love to humor you as well as win the project. Contact us with the details regarding your custom letterpress vision, we look forward to hearing from you!

There is nothing so delicious as lemonade made with real lemon juice. In this recipe, we start with a simple syrup that can be kept in the refrigerator up to a month. Use both rosemary and mint, or according to your taste, use just one or the other. The simple syrup serves as the sweetener for the fresh lemonade. Use according to individual taste.
