The Dingbat’s Agenda

    dinos

Sometimes I go about the day without paying much attention to my surroundings. These were discovered after I got the kids in bed last night and finally had a look around at the disaster zone within my home. I thought it was so beautiful how each dinosaur/creature was aligned and balanced on our 8′ railing, observing the usual chaos that encompasses our daily lives. Still and silent predators, they were awaiting my attention. Oh how I love the spontaneous aesthetics of a 4 year old!

My man would be ashamed if he knew I was admitting this to the mass public, seeing that I’ve lived here in Driggs now for 9 years.

And so it goes, I hail originally from Utah! For those of you not familiar with the landscape in that state it pretty much consists of fabulous mountainscapes (think 2002 olympics) and in southern Utah, the amazing redrock landscape (don’t think about the inbetween stuff, bleh). I’m really itching for some camping in Bryce Canyon or Zion’s National Park however my pregnant back is screaming no! So without further thought on life without a shower for a few days, I thought I’d make some cupcakes that reminded me of the landscape south of the border (my border that is)!  I love the rough texture of this frosting, it really adds character to the delectable taste.

Of course I had ulterior motives on this one, as I wanted to show you another little something that I printed last week to go along with it…Enjoy these lovely gift tags!

…and everything sucks, sometimes all you can do is

    Smile letterpress 4Bar Notes

For those of you that are new as of 2009, a little more info about me. Welcome! On top of owning a design/letterpress studio, I am a mom of two awesome children and have a fantastic husband. Our oldest (4 years) was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in December, and we almost lost him due to our lack of knowledge as to what was going on with his little body, literally he would have died within the following 48 hours had I not had the inclination to have him tested.

With that said, it’s been a life changing event for our little family, and I’m thankful I have work that helps pay for expensive medication and that I’m lucky to enjoy the career path I have. You all make it possible for me to continue as well, as you contribute to my product development and encourage me to continue to work hard at making you happy! I can be at home with my studio and kids and monitor daily blood checks and insulin injections, work with clients, play with kids and create.

    However, some days suck.

    sheesh1

Today we got printed jobs out early, and then left for appointments with our diabetes specialist who is an hour and a half away from us. The little man started feeling sick so I pulled off the highway to check his blood sugar. He was approaching a low reading and we were almost to a place where we could get food. I had about a 20 minute window before it became serious (10 minutes from destination). I admit fully, I was speeding – 10mph over the limit. I got pulled over. The cop not only did not believe me when I told him that my son was having a diabetic low and I was in a hurry, but he proceeded to inform me that he was an EMT and was trained to help in this situation if indeed it was serious. However he had nothing to treat a low (sugar, candy) and insisted I give him insulin (which is the last thing you should do with a low) which I refused to do. He then made me test my son again to prove the low, in which he informed me that I could be facing a $240 ticket since I was acting irrational and uncooperative.

Pregnant hormones and this sort of situation don’t bode well. Finally after about 15 minutes of this, I finally told him he could escort me to the dr. and write a ticket there, but that we needed to get going. To which he responded, he wasn’t going to give me a ticket and that I was getting too worked up over everything. My record indicated I had not had a ticket since 2001. 8 Years of a clean record and I get this!

Needless to say, we survived and I’m annoyed at ignorant local law enforcement. But now it’s time to shake it off an move on. Thanks for letting me vent to you.

These cards are for those sort of situations. Simple, concise and direct. Now I just have to smile and be thankful that it wasn’t any worse. Like water off a duck’s back they say! Happy St. Patrick’s Day! The luck of the Irish obviously wasn’t with me today, maybe I should have painted my face green today instead of putting make up on!

I bet the cop would have really loved that.

If only I had rented a macro lens this time for product photography. These cards have different patterns! If your eyes are playing tricks on you don’t be alarmed, the monitor is not on the fritz, it’s these stellar fine strokes creating that googly eye effect. Zoom in to see what it looks like up close. Pretty cool huh?

So I’ve been trying to create a printer’s colophon/emblem for my stationery ever since I started selling stationery for retail. I’ve always been happy with the logo, but it poses a strange challenge with incorporating it into anything else. It’s never been something that I’ve been happy with until this:

    Printers Emblem/Colophon

Introducing the new mark that will now minimally show itself on all retail stationery printed by yours truly!

    FrontDoor

Wishing it looked like this today! Here’s a view from the front door taken last week. Hopefully this rain will melt back enough for me to get out and put some new soil in the raised beds next week! Wishful thinking…happy monday. I’ll be back later with more product shots!

    The Back Door

The snow is slowly melting off and here’s a view from the back door. Taken this week, hopefully it’s a sign of spring to come! See those willows poking out right in the center of the photo? Usually they are covered this time of year. Happy Friday!

Taken with a Canon Digital Rebel Xsi, 50mm 1.4 fixed lens. I’m far from knowing what I’m doing here with my camera, just having fun with the lens and some mad photoshop skillz.

    Play dough fun!

Ever wonder what one does when a babysitter is scarce and printing needs to be done? Enter playdough. I’m not a big mess encourager (except for paint) and now I can’t believe I haven’t made playdough before! It is a mindless, hour over hour kid entertainer. No fights ensued today! Lots of printing got done. Totally worth the cleanup involved afterwards. Photos from the press tomorrow and over the next week!

Recipe: 2C. Water, 2C. salt, 1c. Flour. Add all ingredients into pot on cooktop and stir constantly on low heat until it balls up. Prepare for dead-arm. Keep stirring until its on the drier side. Remove from pot and let cool for a minute of two, add food coloring and knead in. If its still a little sticky, let sit out for about an hour (the kids won’t be happy about this). Keeps 2-3 weeks in ziploc baggies. Or you can let your sculptures air dry. Enjoy!
